Well we were going to do a great blog on buying the loveliest blinds in the world, which I know you know we sell, to help you get a relaxing night’s sleep. And then we thought do we really want to do that. And then we thought yes we absolutely do because stuck at home worrying is exactly when you want to know how to get a better night’s rest. Although you will have to wait to buy the blinds as the shop is not open right now.
Weirdly insommnia is not just a thing for the corona virus crisis. A trawl of the statistics show that we actually sleep 20% less than 100 years ago and, apparently, most people who suffer from insomnia have had trouble sleeping for 11 years or more. And, it’s definitely not good for your health as being tired makes us eat more. A Food Unwrapped trial measured how much calorie laden food was desired by a fully rested person and compared that with how much calorie laden food was desired by a sleep deprived person. It was no news to many that a sleep deprived person craves food high in fact and carbohydrates!
And sleeping is great for your creativity. The way the needle works on a sewing machine was invented in a dream. Yes, seriously, it was. Elias Howe, wanted a better way to fit the needle onto the machine and he was completely stumped until he had a nightmare that he was about to be executed by guards whose spears had a hole in the top. He woke up quickly from his nightmare, rushed to his workshop, and got the prototype down on paper, needle and all.
So how to get a good night’s rest when you are stressed, as most of us probably are right now. First cut out as much screen time as possible, get the room as dark as possible (and that’s where blackout blinds come in), drink some valerian tea which is a great natural relaxant and, this is really key, make sure you’ve been active - walking the dog, going for a run - every day you are working from home.
And above all - stay safe!
